Short description:

The Review: This is an anthology selected from an extensive collection of anonymous folk verses strung and passed down through oral tradition. It wasn't until the late nineteenth and early twentieth centruies that a number of folklorists and enthusiasts began to put these and other folk songs down on paper. The opportunities to sing these songs were numerous, including Christmas, Santa Agueda, making the rounds, children's wishes and desires and, above all, dance songs accompanied by musical instruments. The stage for this folk literature was the town square, the area surrounding a chapel or simply a piece of flat land used as a play area. All of the dance songs included a number of verses which generally spoke of little more than the environment, the mysteries of love, having a good time and the ironies of life. Technically speaking , the songs were short and concise, more visual than discursive. Nature, animals, tools, people and thoughts would come together on the same level until reaching a certain degree of abstraction as a result of leaving out grammatical links, particularly verbs, which due to the paraphrasic construction of Euskara (Basque for the Basque language), become quite long. The folksongs are endearing, at times sarcastic, always elegant and some surprisingly beautiful. But more importantly, they reflect a way of life, customs, values and thoughts on Euskal Herria as it was, is and is determined to continue being. Key words:
