The Review: It was supposed to have been a class. We sat in the untidy, neglected and altogether charming premises in the Sibelius Academy's folk-music department at Malmgatan 12 in Helsinki, sometime in the beginning of the 1990's, Maria with her accordion and Sven with his violin. Maria wanted to see if it was possible to play improvised harmonies on the accordion with a melodic bass, the way it's done in Swedish instrumental folk music. Sven had a rather vague idea as to what the accordion was or for that matter how it was played and what could be played on it. After ten minutes it was less of a class and more of a collaboration where, together, we attempted to play traditional melodies; Swedish, Finnish and Finland-Swedish, one after the other, constantly changing parts. It isn't often you get that feeling the first time playing together; that everything works immediately, that without needing to look you can sense your partner's breathing and the resultant music surprises you. A few of the songs found their way onto Maria's first solo album, and despite all of the difficulties involved in getting together, the exchange has continued. We are still attempting to discover the bow and the bellow's mutual breathing, in spite of all the buttons and fingers. On this record we are also assisted by Johan Hedin's nyckelharpa and Susanne Rosenberg's voice. Key words: AHLBACK LUFTSTRAK
