Earlier influenced by the tradition of text songs, this interpreter/composer has demonstrated in "Missangas" (Beds), his first record, the contemporaniety of his speech based on a musicality that reveals his African origins. In "Barco Voador" (Flying boat), João Afonso travelled through the rest of the world, giving his songs a universal dimension.
Returning to his roots, his last record Zanzíbar - relies on the dissimilarity of its songs, with a sonority filled with rhythms that throws us into the world's warmest places.
