Review |
| | The Skogfinns, originally from Finland, brought rune songs with them, when they immigrated into the Finnskogen area in the 1600s.
The word "rune" is a Germanic word for secrets or magic, and singing rune songs means singing magicals songs. Rune songs are based on shamanism, but they also bear traces of other aspects of intellectual history. They can be divided into several categories: epic runes, lyrical runes, chain runes and incantations (loitsu). Incantations were the most prevalent type used by the Skogfinns. They were used for both protections and healing, and were read or chanted with intense emotion and power. These incantations do not have meldies in the ususal sense so Sinikka Langeland has used themes from rune melodies from Finland and Karelia asa basis for new musical settings for the old rune texts from Finnskogen. She has also used elements from the Western music tradition, such as the rhythms of the Finnskogen pols dance.
The leaflet inside the CD sets out the lyrics and explains more about the genre. |
