| 'Hoven Droven', whose name can be translated as 'helter skelter' are an exciting 5 piece band who originally were formed in Östersund, Sweden in 1989. Their latest CD, 'Turbo' contains 14 high octane folk rock tracks and feels more like the days of Grov than their more recent albums. Specializing in taking Swedish folk music into the more rockier climates, Hoven Droven have, with this new release maintained a beautiful melodic lyricism inherent in Swedish dance music forms. 'Turbo' takes you on their helter skelter of crazy rhythms, electric guitars and soaring interplay between the saxophone and fiddle. It is utterly melodic and entrancing, moving seamlessly from the quietly magnificent waltz 'Kom Hem' to the much rockier arrangement of 'Morsepolskan', leaving you inspired and exhilarated. Crashing musical chaos swings into soulful original compositions - as the CD defines it's title as providing an engine more power, so does Hoven Droven provide music with uplifting energy. Guests include Gustav Hylen (trumpet) and Martin Andersson (Acoustic and Parfitt guitars).
fROOTS Review.... My God - what an album! It's massive, it's scary, it's gothic, it's... bloody exhilarating and is certainly the best new music I've heard this year. The band look and play like men possessed, there are huge brooding, atmospherics throughout, the melodies beat and pummel, it's the perfect soundtrack for Gormenghast. Yet for all that, 'Turbo' is an alluring menace that you just can't resist and like some hopeless addict, I've had overloud waltzes and polkas ringing around my brain for days.Be in no doubt, this is a return to form after the slightly bare wire 'Hippa'; the tunes, all pumped, injected and muscled, are about cars, drinking, having a good time, hunting and er... farmyard cats?
Not that it matters one ounce, Hoven Droven must, with this set, have catapulted themselves high into the upper stratosphere for those who favour their roots rocked and twisted. Don't expect anything that won't stop you in your tracks, this is true crossover mentality: Droven rock harder than most and reel with a bone craking passion, the violin and sax switching lead with a paranoid guitar. Any easier, slow moments flit by so speedily, all you recall at the end of the album is the mad, disturbed pace of it. A beautiful, vivid drama that will leave you breathless.
