Djelimoussa 'Balake' Sissoko, the son of the late master of the kora, Djelimady Sissoko was born in Bamako in 1967. He took up the kora at the age of 7. He succeeded his father in the prestigious National Instrumental ensemble of Mali in 1981. He left the ensemble in 1988 to accompany the great Malian singer Kandia Kouyate.
Nicknamed the "African harp" the kora is classified as a harp-lute
