In Brittany, as in some other European areas, singers and several traditional instrumentalists have preserved a modal undertanding and practice. These musicians have kept using intervals (notes) inexistent on keyboards or guitars because they are 3/4 or a note apart.
Up until now, musicans playing in the embelmatic bands of the Breton Cultural revival of the last decades had to reinvent forms mixing the practice of 'modern' instruments, harmony and local expressions.
By choosing another way Kreiz Breizh Akademi, prefers to adapt instruments and to reinforce musicians' specific understanding of the music from Basse Bretagne (Western Brittany). Therefore, harps, guitars and accordions have been modified to play the scales used by the singers. Specific works have allowed performers to practice the same scales on their ususal instruments(saxophones, clarinets, violins...)..." |
